5 in 5: Fall Pleasures
The leaves are turning, the thermometer is dropping and you’ve pulled out your favorite cable-knit sweater from its long hibernation deep in the back of your closet. And that means it’s prime time to enjoy these five simple but satisfying fall pleasures.
Pleasing pumpkin pleasures. Enjoy a pumpkiny-spice latte, muffin, muesli or anything else — either sitting on a front porch swing under a wool blanket or snuggled up in your favorite cozy reading chair next to a blazing fire. And you know … there’s no rule saying that you have to save that pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.
Tailgate party at home. No ticket to the big game? No problem — you can still enjoy the time-honored tradition of tailgating. Gather your favorite finger food in front of the wide-screen TV and enjoy all the pregame entertainment. To make it a truly authentic experience, sip your beverage of choice from none other than a red Solo cup.
Turn over an old leaf. Go for a ride on a crisp autumn afternoon and take in all the glorious sights and smells of autumn. Bring home some colorful fall foliage to display on tabletops or in floral arrangements. Press some particularly vibrant specimens between the pages of a book to use in your scrapbook or other fall craft projects.
Apple picking. Nothing says fall more than plucking a ripe apple off a tree in the middle of an orchard. But then what? Baking brings out every last delicious drop of apples’ quintessentially fall flavor. Simply layer about a half dozen peeled and thinly sliced apples into a butter-greased baking dish and top each layer with a dusting of cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg and 3-4 tablespoons of water. Set oven to 350 and bake for about 45 minutes. Serve with a generous scoop of vanilla custard — and enjoy one of the most delicious fall pleasures.
Getting grounded and grateful. Start a gratitude habit that can sustain your soul long after the last leftover turkey sandwich is gobbled down. And the good thing is there’s no right or wrong way to do it. You can use a paper journal or a smartphone app — or even create a gratitude corner in your home with photos and trinkets reminding you of everything and everyone in your life you’re thankful for.
Here’s to a fabulous fall!
